Born in Piraeus Greece, graduated from 1975, studied Biology at the Faculty of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and graduated in 1980. Post graduate research fellow at National Center for Scientific Research (NCSR) Demokritos.
Doctoral thesis: in the field of “Cytoskeleton in cancer cells” and was completed at 1984 carried out at the Max-Planck Institute for Cell Biology Heidelberg Germany and obtained his doctoral degree from Karls Rupercht University Heidelberg, Biology Faculty. In 1985 he worked at EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory) Heidelberg, Germany as a postdoctoral scientist.
From 1985-1987 he served in the Greek Army as an Officer. Between 1998 and 1989 he worked as a postdoctoral scientist at the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Goettingen, Germany funded from the European Community BIOTECH program.
From 1989 until 1996 he worked as a researcher at EMBL Hamburg, Center for Structural Biology where he established a group to the direction on structure and function of proteins of biotechnological interest. In 1996 he was elected Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at the Biology Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and in 2006 as full Professor.
For 10 years he has been tutoring at the Greek Open University. Along the entire course of his scientific activity he has been participated in numerous competitive programs at the European, National and Bilateral international level. He was a member of the National Research and Technology Council between 2004 and 2006; vice chairman and chairman of the Central Committee for the Panhellenic examinations (2006-2015); member of scientific councils and scientific national and international organizations.
Member of the Greek Bioeconomy Forum and Member of the National Research Council (Section Energy). Organizer of several International Summer Schools (10 on Structural Biology and Drug Design and 7 in Sustainable Development and Circular Bioeconomy). He has translated-edited 12 books in Bioeconomy, Biotechnology, Proteomics and Protein Sciences and Biostatistics. Author/co-author of over 150 scientific publications and 250 national and international presentations.
Chairman of the International Conference on Extremophiles 2022 and 2024 in Greece. Active member of the European Initiative on Bioeconomy Education and the foundation of European Bioeconomy University. He talks to several relevant Masters in Greece and abroad. Previously awarded with his group by the BBI Challenge for the management of urban biomass.
Currently member of the Council for Development and Innovation of Peloponnese District and founder and director of the Research Institute for Biotechnology-Circular Bioeconomy-Sustainable Development of the Research Center of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He is also involved in the BioINSouth project funded by CBE-JU.
