Financing a Sustainable Global Bioeconomy

Financing a Sustainable Global Bioeconomy provides the results of a pioneering landscape analysis of the current and prospective interplay between finance and the bioeconomy.

About the Financing the sustainable global bioeconomy Project

Financing a Sustainable Global Bioeconomy’s institutional context is the leadership taken by Brazil in establishing the G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy in its G20 Presidency and hopefully South Africa’s G20 Presidency in 2025, the prioritisation of finance and the bioeconomy by the Colombian Presidency of the forthcoming Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16), and the place of the bioeconomy in building international collaborative action on climate, grounded in the Conference of the Parties on climate change under the Brazilian Presidency in 2025 (COP30).

Financing a Sustainable Global Bioeconomy is the initial product of a collaboration between NatureFinance and the World Bioeconomy Forum. It draws on the extensive work of both organisations and draws on the wealth of knowledge and practical experience of many of its partners.

About the Event

On 12th September, the World Bioeconomy Forum is proud to support and participate in a pivotal event that will bring together leading representatives from the Global Bioeconomy Initiative (GIB), multilateral organisations, bioeconomy stakeholders, the private sector, finance, academia, and other key decision-makers. This event aims to explore innovative strategies to leverage the bioeconomy, driving positive impacts for our planet and communities.

The event serves as a platform for stakeholders across various sectors to engage in discussions on how the bioeconomy can become a sustainable alternative to traditional economic models. Key topics will include the financing of the bioeconomy, and the role of innovation, regulation, and international cooperation in accelerating its growth. The ultimate goal is to foster a bioeconomy that benefits the climate, nature, and people.

Why It Matters

The bioeconomy is on the brink of significant expansion, with projections indicating potential growth from its current 4 trillion dollars to an impressive 30 trillion dollars in the near future. Major economies such as Brazil, China, the EU, India, and the USA have set ambitious growth targets, reflecting a global trend towards sustainable economic development, particularly within the Global South.

However, the bioeconomy has yet to be fully integrated into the global financial system and mainstream economy. This event will address this critical gap, emphasising the need for rapid scaling of the bioeconomy to tackle the intertwined challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss—requiring substantial financial investment.

In 2023, Brazil’s G20 presidency highlighted the bioeconomy as a key agenda item through the launch of the groundbreaking Bioeconomy Initiative (GIB). This event is part of the ongoing effort to advance this agenda and ensure that the bioeconomy plays a central role in global economic strategies.
